Chalreston (WV) or Frostburg State? It seems one of these two are headed for the tournament.

The start of the DII baseball season is one day away. May as well fit one last conference preview in, right? Before we get to the MEC, take a look at the previous conferences.

Previous conference previews: SSC | LSC | PSAC | MIAA | Conference Carolinas | GSC | PBC | SAC | GLVC | RMAC | NE10 | PacWest | G-MAC | CCAA | GNAC | GAC | GLIAC | NSIC

MEC facts to know

  • Frostburg State got the job done offensively last year, leading the conference in batting average and runs scored. West Virginia State provided the fireworks, leading the conference in home runs last year.

  • Charleston (WV) led the conference in ERA and batting average against. Frostburg State tied with Wheeling for the most strikeouts, while the Bobcats also walked the fewest hitters in the MEC.

  • West Virginia State was also the best fielding team in the conference. Pair that with all those dingers, and it certainly helped get the Yellow Jackets to the MEC finals.

  • Charleston won its third-straight MEC tournament title last year and once again made the DII baseball championship bracket. However, in my 10 years covering the sport, nary an MEC team has made it to Cary, and you have to go all the way back to 2005 to when a current MEC team (West Virginian State) advanced to the finals. The finals weren’t in Cary yet and the MEC wasn’t even the MEC yet (it was the WVIAC).
